Williams urges de Blasio and Bratton to acknowledge race

Conor Skelding

Councilman Jumaane Williams called on his Council colleagues and the de Blasio administration to acknowledge that race was "an issue" in the death of Eric Garner on Staten Island last week.

"I believe that in order for us to move forward, we have to 100 percent acknowledge that race is an issue—in this case, and in so many cases that have come before," Williams said, during the City Council's stated meeting on Thursday.

Williams has been one of a handful of lawmakers to cite race as a factor in the death of Garner, who died on Thursday after being restrained by police officers in what appeared to be a chokehold.
