A law-abiding, livery-style Lyft launching tonight in NYC

Lyft will launch tonight in New York City, and it will do so in accordance with city regulations, the San Francisco-based taxi-app company has announced.
"Tonight, after making positive progress with local and state leaders, Lyft will launch in all five boroughs of New York City," reads an announcement posted on Lyft's website today. "Weve finalized an agreement to offer immediate access to our friendly, affordable rides through a [Taxi and Limousine Commission]-licensed model beginning at 7 p.m."
At the same time, Lyft will cease its operations in Rochester and Buffalo by the first of August, "while we work with the Attorney Generals Office and Department of Financial Services to align New York States insurance laws and regulations with emerging technologies of the 21st century."
The timing of Lyft's announcement was no coincidence. A judge was scheduled to rule today on a request by city and state officials for a temporary restraining order on Lyft's operations in Rochester and Buffalo, and on its prospective operations in New York City, on the grounds that it was violating existing regulations.
