City of Albany, KeyBank team up to fight hunger

Hannah Nesich

Monday kicked off a 12-day citywide food drive with the ambitious goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food — a collaborative effort between The Food Pantries for the Capital District, the city of Albany and KeyBank.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said many city food pantries see an increase in demand during the summer months, making it an ideal time to host a drive and raise awareness about the issue of hunger, which is closer to home than many realize.

"Particularly in the summertime when we have children who are out of school, the food needs of our families grow exponentially," Sheehan said at a press conference at City Hall Monday. "When [children] have often ten meals a day through breakfast and lunch served in our schools, summertime is often a really difficult time. So it's a perfect time for us to be highlighting the needs of our community and hunger in our community because it is an unfortunate reality in our world."
