Bill targets campus sexual assaults

Finger Lakes Times

WASHINGTON — A William Smith College student who says she was raped last fall joined U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand Wednesday in urging Congress to better protect students from sexual assault.

The student, identified only as Anna, previously told her story to The New York Times. In a video of Wednesday’s press conference posted at 13wham.com, she said that what happened to her — and to too many other women and men — is wrong.

“It should not matter what you drink or what you wear,” she said. “That does not give anyone the right to sexually assault you.”

Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and fellow Sens. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.; Dean Heller, R-Nev.; Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.; Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa; Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H.; Mark Warner, D-Va.; and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., are cosponsoring a bill called the Campus Safety and Accountability Act. More than a dozen senators stood with sexual assault victims and advocates Wednesday to announce the proposal.
