E.P.A. fracking report may complicate Cuomo ban

Scott Waldman

ALBANY—Just when New Yorkers thought the debate over fracking in the state was settled, a federal report released on Thursday concluded that the extraction process does not lead to widespread water pollution.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency found there was no evidence that fracking caused “widespread, systemic” pollution of water sources. The agency did, however, find hundreds of examples of localized water pollution and found “vulnerabilities” to water supplies as a result of the process, which the fracking industry often has denied.

Governor Andrew Cuomo banned fracking late last year after his health and environmental conservation commissioners determined that it could not be done safely. Administration officials have said the ban is not permanent and could be lifted if the science changes.
