Two Queens Democrats crafting amendment to stop Cuomo from slashing AG, controller budgets

KENNETH LOVETT

ALBANY — Two Queens Democratic lawmakers are crafting a proposed state constitutional amendment that would make it difficult for the governor to slash the budgets of the state attorney general and controller’s offices, the Daily News has learned.

The proposal, which is being drafted by state Sen. Michael Gianaris and Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, comes after it was revealed Thursday that Gov. Cuomo’s new counsel sent surveys to state agencies asking questions about their interactions with the attorney general’s office.

The New York Times, which first reported the surveys, said the results could be used as justification to slash funding and other resources from the attorney general’s office — something Cuomo aides vehemently deny.
