NYC nears record for rat complaints: 'I've seen rats walking upright, saying, "Good morning"'

NEW YORK — To many in New York City, the rats are winning.

The city's complaint hotline is on pace for a record year of rat calls, exceeding the more than 24,000 over each of the last two years. Blistering audits have faulted efforts to fight what one official called a "rat crisis." And even jaded New Yorkers were both disgusted and a little impressed by "Pizza Rat," the plucky rodent in a recent viral YouTube clip seen dragging a large cheese slice down a subway stairwell.

Nora Prentice, who lives on Manhattan's Upper West Side, has repeatedly complained to the city about a colony of about 200 rats in a neighborhood park.

"It's like the Burning Man of rats," she said. "They're just sitting there in a lawn chair waiting for you. I don't know what the city can do about this rat condominium. It's really gross."

I really like what I read about them. They really are interesting. I read a study that a rat will help out another rat that is getting wet if it is taught how to get his lab buddy out of the water and the rat will forgo a treat to do it. So, they really are amazing. Still they are rats and they give me the heebee jeebees.

Okay, it was a 1 minute Public Service Announcement (against littering).

Between the music and the b&w effects, I expected Nosferatu to appear in a rat-drawn carriage.

Clean up your streets. Clean up your homes. Keep food in breach proof containers. Keep food in your refrigerator. Locate garbage dumps away from residences. Put out your garbage is sealed plastic containers, and ensure that the garbage is promptly removed. Also, in your homes, put your garbage in a sturdy container with a lid that seals down tightly.

And quit throwing your shit in the streets.

Amazingly, the birth rate of rats decline if their food supply is meager.
