Kaloyeros sentenced to over 3 years in SUNY Poly scandal

NEW YORK — A federal judge sentenced SUNY Polytechnic Institute founder Alain Kaloyeros to 3 ½ years in prison Tuesday, saying he steered $855 million in bids for state contracts to contributors of Gov. Andrew Cuomo in order to score "brownie points" with the governor.

U.S. District Court Judge Valerie Caproni scolded Kaloyeros, 62, for rigging the bids in Cuomo's "Buffalo Billion" initiative, and for trying to cover up his crimes. She reminded Kaloyeros that he had deleted incriminating emails in which he discussed state business on a private account.

"These are the actions of a scheming criminal, not of an upstanding SUNY employee," the judge said.

Caproni told Kaloyeros his corruption case was unusual because, unlike many defendants, he did not benefit financially; instead, Kaloyeros benefited politically in an effort to boost his power. He steered bids to LPCiminelli in Buffalo and COR Development in Syracuse, both of whom were generous donors to the governor's re-election campaign.
