Skidmore professor won't be punished for curiosity

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Professor David Peterson says Skidmore College has decided not to discipline him after his decision to check out a pro-police rally brought demands that he be fired.

That's a refreshing bit of sanity in this increasingly irrational world, I suppose, although the email notifying Peterson of the good news wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of free speech and the First Amendment. It said merely Skidmore's administration did not feel Peterson was guilty of anything that "rose to the level of policy violations."

The art professor will not, therefore, be punished for being inquisitive.

As I wrote in a prior column that attracted some national attention, Peterson said he and his wife decided to check out a "Back the Blue" rally held in Saratoga Springs simply because they were curious about it. They watched supporters trade barbs with counter-protesters for about 20 minutes before leaving Congress Park to get dinner.

I have an aunt and 2 cousins who are Skidmore graduates and I took a course there in the summer when I needed to make one up. I should pass this along...

This might be the first time Skidmore has been mentioned on DU.

As a kid I had a math tutor who was a Skidmore student and their stables were right down the road from me, I took riding lessons there starting at age 9, loved the horses. And I had friends from my high school who went there, too - besides relatives.
