Woman seriously injured by rare shark bite off NYC's Rockaway Beach

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman was seriously injured after a shark bit through her thigh while she was swimming at a New York City beach, officials said, an unusually severe attack that appears to be without precedent in recent decades.

The 65-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was swimming off Rockaway Beach just before 6 p.m. Monday when a shark bit into her left leg, the city parks department said in a statement.

The bite removed a chunk of flesh from her thigh, leaving a gaping wound several inches wide and deep, according to a photo shared with The Associated Press.

Lifeguards pulled the woman from the water, administered first aid and applied a tourniquet to her leg. She was taken to a nearby hospital, with police describing her condition as critical but stable.

And I grew up with a boat on long Island.

You really don't want to know how many sharks there are within wading distance of the shore.

There is even a thresher nursery off long Island. We see mako, great white, nurse, thresher, brown, and a few other species.

Attacks may be rare, but sharks aren't.

Even in the winter.

It’s pretty, easy to get to and it’s free!

This event will inform our swimming choices!

from the beach every evening. Occasionally we’d be whistled out of the water when a fin was seen. But don’t remember anyone ever being bitten.
