Senator seeks release of remainder of federal heating aid for NY

WASHINGTON – The annual Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has allocated $361 million for New York this winter, but only $316 million of that has been handed out.

US Senator Charles Schumer (D, NY) on Wednesday called on the Department of Health and Human Services to distribute the remaining money immediately.

“With the polar vortex driving down temperatures to record lows, this heating assistance is desperately needed, this extra $35 million,” Schumer said. “Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers including many seniors on fixed income, homes with children under six, are eligible to apply for LIHEAP and it is delivered as a one-time grant for winter starting in November of each year."
