TARRYTOWN (WABC) -- A tractor removing snow from a reservoir went through the ice and crashed into the water in Westchester County Thursday morning.
The incident happened at the Tarrytown Reservoir just before 11 a.m.
Police say the driver managed to escape the sinking rig before it was was submerged.
He was rushed to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia.

(86,636 posts)but one might think there would be a little more consideration to ice density and vehicle weight prior to going out there. It doesn't look like a very heavy rig but looks can be deceiving. I once operated a machine that doesn't look all that big but was actually 44,000lbs in a fifteen foot overall length, it sank in unstable snow I was packing with it... all that weight concentrated in a small area... Guess they'll be rethinking that procedure after this.
Still, I hope the guy comes out okay after his hospital stay. Not a fun experience.

(37,449 posts)I worked for the REc in my town and we used a push shovel.. Of course the idiots been then thought they could burn in a barrel on the ice too.
