Progressive Caucus Of NYS Democratic Party Calls On Senate IDC To Rejoin The Fold

KEN LOVETT

The progressive caucus of the state Democratic Committee is pushing a resolution for the five members of the Senate Independent Democratic Conference to quit its coalition with the Republicans and rejoin the mainstream Democratic conference.

The resolution laments that that the co-governing agreement between the IDC and the GOP gives the Republicans power to stop such "progressive" legislation to create a state campaign public financing system and Gov. Cuomo's 10-point women's equality act that, in part, would strengthen abortion rights.

IDC members have repeatedly noted that even if many of the progressive measures reached the floor, there are not enough votes to pass them.

But the state party progressive caucus said chances are improved if the Democrats in the chamber--which actually hold a numerical majority--were united.
