Law will cap flood insurance hikes

Brian Tumulty

WASHINGTON — Dutchess County homeowners who are paying dramatically increased flood insurance premiums will get some relief under legislation Congress is expected to approve next week.

A measure that would cap the annual increase in National Flood Insurance Program premiums at 18 percent overwhelmingly passed the House on Tuesday and is expected to pass the Senate by the end of the week.

The House voted 306-91 to approve the measure, with Rep. Sean Maloney, D-Cold Spring, voting yes.

“I support approaching this policy more intelligently and phasing in premium increases,’’ Maloney said in an interview.
