Kingston gets favorable rating as place to spend retirement years

Freeman staff

KINGSTON >> The online publication “Great Retirement Spots” has recommend Kingston as a place for people to spend their gold years.

In its description of Kingston, the publication, which regularly reviews the nation’s most popular locations for retirees, noted the area’s numerous public events and music festivals, its scenic parks and waterfront and various dining locations. It also made specific mention of the city’s arts community, including the Ulster Performing Arts Center and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic.

The overview noted 37 percent of Kingston’s population is 45 or older, that the city has at least one hospital that accepts Medicare patients and that the local crime rate is lower than the national average.

It also cited the presence of public transit and a library, the city’s rich history, a median home price of $145,000, a cost of living that’s only 7 percent above the national average, “oustanding” air quality and racial diversity.
