6 percent of NY school budgets seek cap override

AP

Six percent of New York school districts are planning to ask voters to approve budgets that exceed the state-imposed property tax cap.

The New York State Association of School Business Officials says about 32 districts will seek to raise taxes beyond the state-established limit, meaning the budgets will need a supermajority of at least 60 percent to pass.

Last year, 28 school districts tried to override the tax cap and 10 of them succeeded.

Budget votes for the 2014-15 school year take place May 20.
