Health Department: 15 private wells test positive for contamination

Fifteen private wells in the northwestern section of the town of Batavia have tested positive for manure contamination, the Genesee County Health Department announced Friday.
The department issued a news release Friday morning that confirmed that water in 15 wells were positive for bacteria E. coli and coliform, both of which confirm the presence of manure from mammals.
Thirty-one wells were checked since March 14, the day the department received the first complaint of tainted water from a resident. The Health Department received its most recent round of test results late Thursday.
Ingestion of E. coli and coliform can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants and people with compromised immune systems, according to the Health Department.
