Rikers captain charged in death of inmate

Azi Paybarah

A Rikers Island correction officer was charged today with deliberately ignoring pleas for medical assistance from an inmate who swallowed cleaning supplies and was later found dead in his cell.

Captain Terrenence Pendergrass was charged in the 2013 death of inmate Jason Echevarria a week after news broke that another Rikers Island inmate “baked to death” in his cell.

Witnesses said that after swallowing the cleaning supplies Echevarria was “continually banging on his cell door and asking for medical help … screaming for help and asking for medical help,” according to charges filed by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara's office.
