Thousands Of NYC Union Workers March On City Hall To Demand Retroactive Pay

Thousands of municipal workers chanting “Bye Bye Bloomberg!” shut down three lanes of traffic outside City Hall on Wednesday in a massive demonstration over years of retroactive pay raises.

Our Fermino and Rodgers report:

Carrying signs that said “Fair Contract Now,” the protesters – including off-duty cops, firefighters, teachers, and sanitation workers – scoffed at Mayor Bloomberg’s claims that the cash-strapped city can’t afford their demands.

“Fair contracts, that’s all we ask for,” said Michael Mulgrew, president of the 200,000-member United Federation of Teachers, which has been without a contract since the fall of 2009.

“The mayor’s out there, spinning this fairy tale and we’re saying, ‘Enough!’”
