(11,441 posts)the Republican juggernaut in this state MUST be stopped. Republicans haven't controlled both chambers of the legislature for over 100 years and since they took control in 2010, they've been on the WAR PATH. If McCrory (R) wins as governor over Dalton (D) in November, I may be slapping up a For Sale sign on my home and fleeing back north.

(53,661 posts)You'd think after a hundred years they'd find something else to be obsessed about.
I'm sure there are high-tech jobs there, too and that should have eased the focus off the old ways.

(11,441 posts)who want to return to some mythical way of life. They hate taxes and will destroy the state in their zeal to lower (or eliminate) them:
A new loophole for businesses will cost state $336 million a year http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/06/03/2105416/a-new-loophole-for-businesses.html#storylink=cpy
(All the while firing teachers, ignoring eugenics victims and axing pre-K programs.)
They also have a pathological hatred of trains, which I will never be able to wrap my brain around. I grew up in MD and watched the DC area *explode* around Metro; the same would happen in the Triangle (major universities, state capitol, Research Triangle Park, international airport, convention center, Durham Bulls stadium, DPAC....DUH!).
A "state-of-the-art" Medicaid contract is a perfect example of the incompetence. It's approaching $1 BILLION and written in freakin' COBOL. North Carolinians were promised jobs, but guess what? Only two NC community colleges teach COBOL. So where are over half of the workers from? India! (God Bless 'em, they gotta work, too.) They're now promising jobs to North Carolinians with fracking, but the jobs will be coming from the outside because no one has the skills.
I've only been here 7 years, but it seems that many North Carolinians pride themselves on being "independent" and not like "the North." They HATE unions, but the state has always had some of the lowest manufacturing wages in the nation. (Yes, be proud, North Carolinians!)
I thought I'd retire here; now I'm not so sure. Vermont is looking pretty good.

I'm more inclined to believe the USGS over some slimy Rethuglican: 12-day nationwide supply of natural gas, and 5-year NC supply. Flammable water and micro-earthquakes -- it's not worth the risk, whether for "not much" or "a lot."

(4,982 posts)Some Mecklenberg Dem pushed the wrong button. The vote will not be reconsidered. This, according to WRAL. Makes sense because several outlets claimed they didn't have votes to override. So it was overridden by "mistake".

(26,732 posts)There are 67 republicans and the vote was reportedly 72-47 on one override and 74-45 on the other.
In the Senate, there are 31 republicans and both votes won with 31 votes... but only 10/11 votes against (when there are 19 Democrats)... so quite a few stayed on the sideline.

(11,441 posts)Yep, not just the GOP (but mostly the GOP). Seems a film industry tax credit worth $60 million factored in to it as well.
And this is just $*% great: "Republican gubernatorial candidates Pat McCrory, a Republican, and Walter Dalton, a Democrat, have both come out in support of the fracking legislation."
