Jury finds Dish Network liable in $20.5M case; Bahamas Krakauer is chief plaintiff in suit
DURHAM — A jury at the Middle District of North Carolina court in Greensboro handed down a verdict of $20.5 million against Dish Network Friday, holding Dish liable for more than 51,000 telemarketing calls to people with telephone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry.
Thomas Krakauer of Bahama, a retired director of the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, was the chief plaintiff of the class-action lawsuit.
The suit stems from a complaint that was filed originally in 2014. The telemarketing calls, which were the subject of the suit, were placed by a now defunct Dish dealer. The jury awarded $400 per violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).
The 10-person jury had the choice of awarding anywhere from $0 to $500 after a five-day trial in Greensboro.
