18. A smile with you in rough times

(I’m in Winston-Salem NC and don’t worry so much but prepare a lot. Hurricane Hugo hit us hard, and they say this is a very similar but possibly stronger one)

Here’s to the smile. My Mother’s middle name is Wilma. After Hurricane Wilma hit the Florida Keys quite a number of years ago, Mom and I made our annual trek to the center of the Keys. Mom came from Germany. She handed her passport to the agent, and he said that if her name really was Wilma she could not come back in. He said the last visit was awful enough.

My mother hated her name and my father never called her by it, which makes it sort of awkward. She even threatened my sister and me that she'd disown us if we ever named a kid after her.

9. Raleigh is quite a bit inland, but Fran showed we can have incredible damage here.

Jacksonville is closer to the coast - at this point, we are all in the target range here in NC.

They are in the outlying path, but then we don’t know exactly what wil happen. Friday will be their rough day.

11. A little concerned

I'm near Raleigh which is about 2 hours inland from the coast. The forecast looks bad but a lot of times things end up not being as bad as they say it will, especially this far out. I remember the "Storm of the Century" a few years back that was supposed to devastate New York. That said, if the forecast turns out to be accurate then we are going to have some big problems here. We've had a lot of rain over the past few weeks and the ground is already saturated. They are saying that it might even stall out over central NC for over a day which could be catastrophic. 10 inches of rain on what we've already had will cause a lot of trees to fall down. I remember Fran in 96 which was pretty bad but this one has the potential to be much worse.

Even far from the coast here in Winston a hurricane such as this one could be fierce. In high winds a few of my smaller flower pots often end up in the neighbor's yard. Time for me to round them up before they go airborne.

15. Re that "prep tomorrow"

I'm 200 miles inland from Wilmington along the predicted path and my wife just called from the local mini-Walmart. The parking lot is full and lots of the usual suspect items were in short supply.

16. we tried to go to Costco this AM - gas up, supplies - forget it. huge lines, full parking lot.

so we went to smaller stores and are now all set.
