Kasich: Local Governments Can Cope With Cuts
Gov. John Kasich on Monday scoffed at the idea that cuts in state money have caused crises in budgets for police, firefighters and road repair in towns, counties and townships.
In an interview Monday with Enquirer reporters and editors, Kasich also said he doesn't feel called to run for president and said even investing magnate Warren Buffett couldn't solve the airline problems that have plagued Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Democrats and many local Republicans have criticized Kasich for helping to fill an $8 billion budget hole in 2011 by authorizing nearly 50 percentcuts to a pot of money called the Local Government Fund. Republicans also eliminated the estate tax, 80 percent of which went to cities and townships, and then pushed tax cuts last year instead of restoring the money for local governments...
..."Are they spending less? You sure?" Kasich said. "I've not heard of any places here where, my goodness, we couldn't put a fire out. If I saw that, I'd be concerned.
