Ohio power plants likely to see costly EPA fines
"Ohio has among the largest coal-fired power plants expected to fall under pending U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules cracking down on harmful heavy metal and other toxic emissions.
A coalition of environmental groups said in a report released Wednesday that some of the nation’s power plants generate a disproportionate amount of arsenic, chromium, hydrochloric acid, lead, mercury, nickel and selenium — including two in Gallia County in southern Ohio and two in Jefferson County in eastern Ohio, based on mercury output.
The groups include the Environmental Integrity Project and the Sierra Club. They said EPA rules, expected before year’s end, would crack down on metals that can cause health problems such as heart attacks and developmental problems in infants."
