St. Vincent nurses approve tentative labor agreement with Mercy Health

TOLEDO -- A three-month labor dispute between Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center and its unionized nursing staff represented by the United Auto Workers ended Tuesday night when nurses ratified a new contract with the hospital.

A UAW official said the three-year pact, the second agreement to be voted on in the dispute, was approved after voting took place Monday and Tuesday at UAW Local 12 hall on Ashland Avenue. Union officials said 83.9 percent of voting members approved the deal.

Roughly 900 nurses, who are members of UAW Local 2213, have been involved in the labor dispute at some point. Most work at St. Vincent, though fewer than 10 work at St. Anne Hospital in West Toledo.

The actual six-week strike against the hospital ended on June 13 with nurses returning to their jobs and working without a contract while negotiations resumed. A tentative contract reached with the help of a federal mediator was rejected on June 16 by 57 percent of the nurses who voted on it — even though it was endorsed by UAW leadership.
