Change in alcohol law sought as Tulsa liquor distributor estimates $100M loss because of one little wordOKLAHOMA CITY — A Tulsa liquor distributor won the first round Tuesday in what he described as a fight against unfair business practices put in motion by Oklahoma’s alcohol modernization laws.
Senate Bill 608, by Sen. Kim David, R-Porter, received its first hearing in current form Tuesday afternoon in the House Judiciary Committee. Stripped of the language that cleared the Senate 44-0 in early March, SB 608 now restores language requiring manufacturers — distilleries and wineries — to make their products available to all wholesalers.
“We’re saying, ‘Give us a fighting chance,’” said Bryan Hendershot, owner of Boardwalk Distribution, the state’s third-largest wholesaler.
In reforming its alcohol laws, Oklahoma lifted a 60-year ban on out-of-state ownership and replaced a “shall” with a “may.”
