Climber rescued after falling into volcanic hole on Mt. Hood

PORTLAND, Ore. — A woman was saved after she fell down a volcanic hole in Mt. Hood, thanks to a vigilant climber who noticed when she disappeared from the surface on Friday, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said 32-year-old Caroline Sundbaum was climbing on Mt. Hood when she stopped to rest. Moments later, she disappeared, falling roughly 15 feet into a fumarole, which is a hole or opening that emits steam and volcanic gasses from the active volcano.

Thankfully, another climber nearby had seen Sundbaum when she sat down, and notice when she was no longer there a minute later. That climber called 911 and made his way over to the fumarole. Authorities said he lowered a rope down to which Sundbaum was able to secure herself and was hoisted back to the surface.

Sundbaum had an injured shoulder, but with help, she was able to make it to the nearest lift and got down from the mountain safely.

I am glad they have abated over the years, but I used to have vivid dreams about dying in horrific ways like that.

4. On one side Hood is a technical mountain on the other side

not so much but still requires an ice axe and basic ice climbing skills. This is a weird accident. I have to wonder about other parts of the story. I would never climb alone on a mountain like Hood.
