Jersey Shore, Pa. — A Jersey Shore football player has passed away following a head injury he sustained during a football game last Friday.
The Engle family shared the heartbreaking update with the Jersey Shore Area School District, which posted the announcement on its Facebook page Saturday evening. ... "Max has been fighting hard throughout this week, but he needed to move on to fulfill a greater purpose," the statement read. "On Friday, September 15th, he joined the Lord and those who loved him and have gone before him. Please know he felt all your love and prayers."
Engle collapsed as he was walking off the field on Sept. 8, with just seconds left in the game at Harold L. Bolig Memorial Stadium in Selinsgrove. Jersey Shore Superintendend Dr. Brian Ulmer shared an update on Engle's condition four days later, saying the teen's condition "has rapidly declined and medical prognosis is not good."
Communities around the region wore orange on Thursday to show support for the family and a fundraiser for the family organized by Engle's best friend, Liam McClain, raised nearly $55,000. ... "The generous gifts you have bestowed upon our family will be used to honor Max as well as to move forward a message of togetherness, community and love," the family said.
The family offered thanks for the community support and thoughts and prayers for Engle's teammates and friends and everyone who was affected by the tragedy. ... "He will be greatly missed every single day and we know he will be with us in everything we do," the statement said. "Although Max's next adventure is not what we thought, we know he is doing greater things than we had hoped for him."

JERSEY SHORE–Members of the Jersey Shore football team, school and community gathered at Bald Birds Brewery in Jersey Shore early Sunday afternoon to honor the life of Max Engle, a former Bulldog football player who passed away on Friday, September 15.
The event was held for the community to gather in fellowship to celebrate Engle’s life and give the family an opportunity to thank everyone for the overflow of support they’ve gotten over the past two weeks.

Thousands of people from students, families and Jersey Shore graduates lined up outside the brewery to wait their turn to take in the emotional but honoring event for Engle. The scene included different pictures of Engle that were displayed at each table and a walk-through with many pictures and memories of Engle’s life, including a big-screen slideshow. Some even gathered for refreshments, sharing condolences to the Engle family.

The event comes just nine days after the passing of the former defensive end. The Bulldogs have played two games since then and have come up with two consecutive wins over Shikellamy seven days ago and Saturday on the road at Mifflinburg. While achieving the goal of winning games has been successful, the Bulldogs haven’t lost sight of supporting the Engle family, playing for their brother Max and remembering who he was as a person and player.

KARNS CITY, Pa. — The Karns City High School football team beat rival Moniteau 48-15 Friday night, taking the field at home for the first time since its quarterback, Mason Martin, collapsed on the field three weeks ago. ... The game took on additional significance for Mason Martin's father, Denny Martin, who teaches at Moniteau.
"It's only fitting that in tonight's first home game since his injury, we're playing against the team, the school that I teach at," Denny Martin said. "And that'll be special for me because Moniteau has a pretty close attachment to this as well. And they all know my son pretty well, too. It'll mean a lot for them to be playing in this game as well as Karns City."
Denny Martin said he would be watching the game online from his son's hospital room. Martin said the last several days there have been encouraging.
"We're starting to see signs of improvement. He's getting a lot of the stuff off his face, tubes and EEG markers. He's starting to look like my son again," Martin said. "He's had a breathing tube come out, so he has a trachea now, but at least the breathing tube, it makes him more comfortable than a tube down his throat, and you can see his face now." ... Denny Martin said he is taking in every victory and is encouraged by the latest word from doctors.

Yard flags in support of Max Engle are starting to appear after Kimberely D. Martin made one for her store window. She is selling the flags at a discount because she said she does not want to make money off a tragedy.

Another Pennsylvania high school football player had to be flown from a game Monday to a Pittsburgh-area hospital, according to a report from TribLive.com.
Per the site, a Latrobe freshman football player was injured near the end of his team’s game against Thomas Jefferson and was airlifted to UPMC Children’s Hospital.
TribLive.com said the player’s identity and condition were not available Monday night.
“The West Jefferson Hills School District, including families, students and staff send their thoughts and prayers to the student, his family and the Greater Latrobe school community,” West Jefferson Hills superintendent Janet Sardon told the site.
The news comes after a frightening and particularly brutal weekend in which at least four high school football players in Pennsylvania had to be rushed to hospitals. And that comes as Karns City quarterback Mason Martin, who collapsed on the field back on Sept. 1 during his team’s season-opener, continues to fight for his life in a hospital Pittsburgh, too.
Per TribLive.com, Laurel Highlands star Antwan Black Jr., Shenango lineman Michael Egetoe and an unidentified Sto-Rox player, all had to be flown to hospitals from their games Friday night. Also, Jersey Shore defensive lineman Max Engle collapsed Friday during his team’s game against Selinsgrove and, according to The {Daily} Item, “trainers and EMTs worked on the Bulldogs’ senior for nearly 10 minutes before he was taken away in an ambulance.”

It's an unnecessary risk these football players have to take, and the possible injuries might affect their entire lives. Why can't the rules be revised enough to make this sport safer for high-school-aged kids?
Coaches and officials need to be vigilant for dangerous behavior and unsportsmanlike conduct. Sometimes these boys just don't realize they might cause a serious injury to themselves or others. "Winning at any cost" just isn't worth it.
