New Central Bucks school board reverses controversial policies

The Central Bucks School District wasted no time making big change in its first school board meeting with a new Democratic majority.

It's a district where some hot-button, politically-charged issues have been in the headlines over curriculum, gender policy, disapproved books and more.

People were so excited about the flipping of this school board, they tailgated outside before the meeting. The meeting itself was electric as well, with loud applause each time a new member was sworn in. The room was so packed that not everybody made it inside, and delayed applause could be heard from outside for people watching the meeting online from there.

Smith introduced a measure Monday night that would suspend several controversial policies enacted by the previous board.

These policies relate to athletics, banned text and library books, and neutrality measures.

Smith said suspending the measures would allow the board to "work in committee, take our time and work with all stakeholders." She added that it is necessary to revise the policies as part of an investigation by the Federal Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights, or OCR.
