City Council gives preliminary approval to ads on city assets
Pittsburgh City Council gave preliminary approval today to a bill that would allow advertising and sponsorship on a range of city assets, including department of public works uniforms, certain city vehicles and parks, a proposal the city believes will bring in $500,000 in revenue.
The bill was originally introduced by Councilman Bill Peduto in July.
The Market Based Revenue Opportunity Program sets forth stringent requirements for who can advertise with the city, what can be advertised and where. For example, while public works uniforms and some city vehicles could become canvases for advertisements, police uniforms, police cars, firetrucks and ambulances are not up for grabs. City council chambers and the mayor's office are also excluded.
The bill would prohibit advertisements for alcohol, guns, tobacco and sexually oriented businesses, such as strip clubs and adult bookstores. Political and religious messages also would be barred.
