Here's the background on PA's new state supreme court justice.

Last edited Tue Jul 2, 2013, 07:04 AM - Edit history (1)

Stevens got unanimous approval from the state Senate to fill the crucial seat vacated by Justice Melvin. The court faces a decision on a major case involving local zoning control over gas drilling by frackers.
I am hopeful about him for several reasons. He's a lifelong Pennsylvanian - unlike some of Corbett's appointments. His history includes working class grandparents. He 's an Outward Bound graduate who is an avid hiker and runner - just off on an Alaskan honeymoon cruise. His history also includes working as city solicitor for small town of Hazelton, so he is well aware of the importance of zoning control by small towns to protect their economy and quality of life. Dare we hope he may place protecting Pennsylvania's environment above the greed of the frackers? What puzzles me greatly is why Corbett would appoint anyone who would not be likely to go along with Corbett's Frack Pennsylvania, profits uber alles agenda.

Stevens has also been named Humanitarian of the Year, taken many actions to educate the public about the court systems, and he studied out of state at University of California at Santa Barbara. He even schedules Superior Court sessions at high schools so students can see how the judicial system functions. All of those things are not standard GOP activities.

Fingers crossed on this new Justice.

Stevens, 66, is currently president judge of state Superior Court, an intermediate appeals court, and he has some administrative duties to finish up before being sworn in as a justice, a ceremony he expects to happen later this month.

Stevens, who has served state representative and a Luzerne County judge and district attorney, was packing on Monday for the couple’s honeymoon, a cruise to Alaska.

“I look forward to working closely with the other six justices to resolve legal issues in a careful, deliberative and collegial manner,” Stevens said in a press release Sunday. “I will seek consensus without giving up principle and will be an active participant in the administration of justice.”

Stevens said his office and home will remain in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where his grandmother Elsie Correale worked in a factory in Hazleton and his grandfather Tony Stevens was a Hazleton City police officer.
