Anyone volunteering or going to see the Pope in Philly?

http://www.popefrancisvisit.com/schedule-category/pope-francis-visit-philadelphia-schedule/

I actually signed up as a volunteer. I'm not catholic, I'm actually a Christian but I do not believe in organized religion. More of an old-school do it as Jesus did (did he ever actually attend an organized church?).

But I really do like Pope Francis for the most part. I think as a Catholic he's doing his best to really reach out to the 99% and I always had 'Seeing the Pope speak' on my Bucket List of things to do since I was a kid (I did the inauguration in 2008 and I'll do my first convention in 2016).

I'd be interested in seeing who else was thinking of going. If you were thinking of coming to Philly but couldn't find accommodations, I might be able to help out a few DUers. I'm in Wilmington and the Joe Biden Train Station is just cross town from me which will take you right into Center City Philly.

I don't mind outdoor crowds. Indoor crowds like an overcrowded nightclub can drive me bonkers. Outdoor crowds I can manage.

You in Philly?

I have a little problem with agoraphobia and paranoia. Get me in a crowd, and I start worrying who's behind me. It worked out great whenever I went out to eat with my brother: we both wanted to sit with our backs to the wall. He won, because he was seriously paranoid, I'm only a little paranoid.

But hey, a paranoid is better than none.

and other places I prefer not to be.

I worry the place would catch on fire and I would never get out of the building.

I could be at a great concert, even one with General Admission and if the person is someone I really want to see then I can work the 'Mind over Matter' (I have GA tickets to see Robert Plant at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC in September). But when someone would drag me to a bad overpriced crowded nightclub where awful music was played then I would go nuts. Factor in if I wasn't driving I could get absolutely miserable - I need to know that not only I can get out of there but I have control of the vehicle too. I have abandonment issues in large buildings stemming from the fact that my parents lost me at a mall when I was 6 years old.

Took one step away from my mother, and whoosh! I was gone. Spent a long time wandering around, but I got busted when I wanted to walk through the Liberty Tubes to go home. Gee, who knew pedestrians weren't allowed to hump it through tunnels?

I was a real brat, too. The cops took me to the station and hunted my mother down. She was, you might imagine, torn between hugging me and knocking my head off. She thanked the officers, and I said she shouldn't thank them because they were only doing their jobs.

Ah, childhood.

It had just opened and that place was huge and two stories. I had never seen anything that big in my life. Some nice lady finally took pity on me and took me to Wanamaker security and kept me there while making security announcements. This is why today I prefer going to the malls by myself or only with someone I trust 100% although it has gotten better since cell phones were created. But if I do go to the mall with someone outside of my closest circle of friends I will be the driver, everyone must have a cell phone and we will have a designated meeting place at a certain time just in case we get split up and someone loses their cell phones (That always freaks people out especially ones who are just getting to know me).

And even with my closest friends, you do not drop me off somewhere without me having transportation. My friend wanted to drop me and her daughter off at a flea market while she ran a quick errand and I was like 'no way'. What if her daughter got sick. What if my mother called and there was a family emergency. We stick together or we take separate cars.

Needless to say I shop alone alot. Perhaps it's better that way!

I've developed and nurtured a few phobias with age. Mostly I was bulletproof when I was young, except for a very particular form of acrophobia. I'm not afraid of heights, I've clambered around on cliffs and ridges a lot in my day, but I am seriously phobic about edges -- balcony railings, roof edges, etc. It's classic phobic response, freezing in place, sweating, trembling. Standard Freudian psych tells us there must be a trauma in childhood that caused it, so I figure being burned by my grandmother's cigarette on the balcony overlooking the local swimming pool accounts for it. It wasn't the first time the woman had burned me (not a nice lady), and it was a 3rd-degree burn in the arm while we were pressed up against the railing by the crowds (although I don't think that has to do with my crowd problem, which is not the same order of phobia at all). Could even have been an accident, but it is the only event I can think of to account for the peculiar nature of the phobia. Needless to say, knowing the probable cause does nada for alleviating it.

Yours sounds like a case of compulsion, which is always good to deal with because work-arounds can be devised. I'll make sure never to leave you without transport!

(Reminds me a little of the old Peanuts comic: Linus doesn't want to go away to summer camp, because "what if my parents moved away and didn't tell me?&quot

9. Electrical Storms
Sat Jul 11, 2015, 10:17 AM
Jul 2015

Whenever there was one in the area my mother would go bananas and have us unplug everything in the house for fear one of us would get electrocuted, which btw one time I did electrocute myself on an outlet (my fingers were touching the prongs when I plugged in a lamp).

I have managed to stop unplugging everything in the house during storms but I still shut down many things during bad ones. But I hate being outside in them and they freak me out. And in general I'm a bit weird of electricity in general. I will not jump start a car. I have a small backyard which can be taken care of with my electric weed wacker but because of all the rain I am afraid to use it. (and finding someone to do yard work is hard because of how my row home is setup). You should have seen me freak out at an outdoor YES concert where a massive storm came overhead and we were all stuck underneath one of those outdoor party tents that was wired for electric. I reacted to that storm the way normal women react to seeing spiders and snakes. (Oh and spiders and snakes do not bother me.) At one point someone thought of bringing over the paramedic I was losing my shit but I really thought the storm was going to go away (and I was hoping to see YES). In the end the storm cleared a bit but they only did 2 songs and cancelled the reset of the concert. But we had also seen the Buggles and ASIA beforehand so I think we got our $25 out of the concert. And the 2 songs from YES were 'Long Distance Runaround' and 'All Good People'

... one of his songs is an invocation to Petakoah (sp?), who is a Lenape storm spirit. My brother and I got him to sing it at an outdoor concert in Cape May one time, and before he had finished it, a virtual hurricane had sprung up out of a clear sky. We had to do some serious shifting to get everything unplugged and packed away before the storm wrecked it.

My late aunt refused to take showers during a thunderstorm. OTOH, I knew a lady who loved them, believed they were an expression of her power as an Earth Mother.

debating if I want to get a hotel up in Philly during the convention or just roadtrip back to Delaware.

Usually DU gatherings mean some imbibing. Nice to have a local pillow to rest my weary head!

I'm thinking of staying with Aunt over in Burlington County (NJ) or finding somewhere to "camp". I've got a large van and I can put an inflatable mattress in the back & sleep there.

I'll be keeping all hours while working and I don't really want to bother my aunt with my comings and goings.

It's my understanding Jesus was an observant Jew.
His parents, Mary and Joseph, took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover, where he was located, after being found missing on the return trip, teaching to the rabbis.
The Last Supper was also an observation of the Passover.

I'm sure there are other passages as well.
