Nashville council denounces white supremacist groups week after passing on resolution
Members of Nashville's Metro Council issued a statement Thursday denouncing white supremacist groups and calling on Nashvillians to speak out against hate, racism and bigotry following the violent round of protests in Charlottesville, Va.
The statement, signed by 34 members, comes one week after the council passed on suspending its rules to take up a late-filed resolution that would have expressed opposition to white supremacy.
Because two council members, Doug Pardue and Tanaka Vercher, had objected to the rules suspension, the council did not vote on the resolution. That decision left many council members, including the resolution's sponsor At-large Councilman Bob Mendes, disappointed.
The statement issued Thursday says council members are "outraged at and alarmed" by the increase of "hateful ideologies" that led to the tragic events on the weekend of Aug. 12 in Charlottesville, Va.
