University of Memphis begins staff cuts to stem $50 million in losses

With more than $50 million in losses from spring and fall semesters, the University of Memphis is cutting staff and administrators, including double-digit-percentage pay cuts for administrators through the end of the academic year.

There will also be cuts in self-sustaining services, including at the Holiday Inn on campus, parking, mail and dining services, according to a letter that president M. David Rudd sent to faculty and staff Wednesday, Oct. 7.

“Given the limited number of students on campus and activities last spring, over the summer months, and during the current fall semester, service utilization and related revenue in these units have been profoundly reduced, a problem compounded by the lack of federal relief funds,” he said.

While some reorganization has already happened in these divisions, the university is moving ahead with “limited staffing reductions” in the units to balance its budget, which is required by the state.
