Proposed Refinery Relocation Brings Jobs To Rusk County

A proposed refinery move could mean hundreds of new jobs in the Overton-New London area and changes for West Rusk County Consolidated ISD.

Gregg County Refinery LLC is talking about moving “a lot of assets” of the Gregg County Refinery, a now dormant facility formerly known as Premier refinery, from its current location on Premier Road off U.S. Highway 80, just west of Longview, to a site off Texas Highway 323, Rusk County Judge Joel Hale said.

That site, which includes about 165 acres between County Road 4137 and Texas Highway 323 and County Road 4137A and Texas Highway 323, is within the West Rusk County Consolidated ISD.

He (John Kennon, vice president of business development for CDE Inc., a facilitative management service company) estimated that 300 to 400 jobs will come to the area during the approximately two-year construction period, and up to 85 high-paying jobs are expected at the site. Over the next decade, the economic impact of the project is estimated at $8.039 billion, according to a presentation Kennon made earlier this week. The immediate economic impact, including construction and sales tax on local materials, is estimated at $384,416,800.
