Indicted owner of Texas hospital chain to plead guilty to fraud conspiracy

A Dallas businessman who steered his Texas hospital chain into financial and medical ruin has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud, federal authorities said Thursday.

The deal with prosecutors comes 13 months after Dr. Tariq Mahmood was indicted on that charge and additional counts involving allegations that he altered codes underlying $1.1 million in billings to Medicare.

The charges carry a combined penalty of more than 20 years in prison, with the conspiracy count alone bringing up to 10 years.

It’s unclear whether Mahmood has pleaded guilty to any other charges. Details of the full agreement, reached just days before his trial proceedings were to start, have yet to be disclosed.
