Tea Party, Other Groups Team Up To Build A 'Liberty Movement' And Dominate Texas GOP

Nationally, many Tea Party-backed candidates have been losing primary elections. But in Texas, one big Tea Party organization has joined with other conservative groups. The goal: becoming the dominant voice in Texas Republican politics.

In a meeting room in a Greenville strip mall filled with rows of folding chairs, the head of the state’s largest pro-life group told activists the enemy in Austin isn’t the minority of Democrats. It’s Republicans who haven’t delivered.

“These guys work for us and if they don’t want to pass pro-life bills, tax cuts, home schooling bills they need to go home once and for all,” Texas Right to Life executive director Jim Graham told a crowd of about 100.

"Life, Liberty and Property"

Graham headlined the “Life, Liberty and Property” rally last week with top honchos from Texas Eagle Forum, Empower Texans, the Texas Home School Coalition and Grassroots America, a powerful Tea Party group run by JoAnn Fleming.

It's about time for Texas Democrats to not only start contemplating the Texas Republican Party, but how much closer to Texas' political mainstream they are than the Texas Republican Party is becoming.

Like many Texas Democratic Party donors, I do get a fairish amount of e- and snail-mail communiques from Democratic interests. But one thing lacking (that we'll probably discover come Wednesday), is that Texas Democrats really haven't made enough comments on where the other party is going, and the direction the state is going if current political trends continue.

I think we Texas Democrats ought to state the obvious--the way things are now, if the Tea Party and its allies pick the Republican Party nominees for the general elections, Texas will be (mis-) governed by the Tea Party. I would like to see our leaders and our PACs pointing out that it won't be the pretend-centrism of Dubya that will govern the state in the near future, it will be the Tea Party extremists with their Dominionist, crypto-racist agenda--unless more people go to the ballot box to oppose them.
