Former CPRIT official pleads not guilty to state felony charge, trial set for Aug. 17
AUSTIN An Aug. 17 trial date was set Friday for Jerald Jerry Cobbs after he pleaded not guilty to a state felony corruption charge stemming from his time as a high-ranking official in Texas cancer-fighting agency.
At a brief hearing, Travis County District Court Judge Clifford Brown told Cobbs, the former chief commercialization officer of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, that he could face five to 99 years in prison if convicted.
Cobbs said he understood.
Brown also asked if any plea deals had been offered. Rob Drummond, an assistant district attorney, said defense attorney Rusty Hardin has maintained Cobbs innocence and would accept nothing short of dismissal.
A Travis County grand jury indicted Cobbs in December 2013 in connection with an $11 million grant improperly awarded to a Dallas-based biotechnology firm.
