EMS: 31 sickened by K2 in Austin since Friday
Medical personnel have seen potentially deadly side effects during a recent spate of medical calls related to the synthetic drug K2.
The drug is known to cause high anxiety, paranoia and even violent behavior. Medically, paramedics have seen people suffer seizures and high heart rates in reaction to the drug. But the latest reactions also showed people having very low heart rates combined with low blood pressure, a “deadly combination,” Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Ernesto Rodriguez said.
EMS has counted 31 toxic reactions to K2 since Friday, but they think there have been more.
“We think that this is the tip of the iceberg,” Rodriguez said, noting that the department’s count did not include people who never called 911 or went straight to a hospital.
