Abbott arrives in Mexico for trade, security talks

MEXICO CITY — Gov. Greg Abbott, in a rare visit by a Texas leader, arrived here over the weekend for his first international trip and quickly tried making up for lost time.

He penned an editorial in one of Mexico City’s top newspapers, El Universal, and met with key Mexican officials, including business leaders and governors and their representatives, some from states bordering Texas. The goal: Deal with longstanding irritants head on, from immigration to security, and align the Texas political tone with the reality on the ground, that of a booming economic relationship that continues to thrive despite the strain that in recent years has marked relationships between the two neighbors.

In his editorial featured on El Universal’s front page, Abbott acknowledged a Texas rooted in Mexico, via geography, trade and demographics. The piece also appeared in the Houston Chronicle. The last time a Texas governor visited Mexico was in 2007. Abbott’s last visit to Mexico was in 2005, an aide said.

“Ties between Texas and Mexico began before we became a state,” wrote Abbott, who on Monday will make his only public appearance, addressing business leaders from both sides of the border. “Today, about one-third of Texans trace their roots to Mexico, including my wife whose maternal grandparents immigrated to Texas from Monterrey. And the shared values of our families transcend geographic borders.”
