Brooks County JP charged with theft after admitting eight-liner gambling addiction
FALFURRIAS Brooks County Justice of the Peace Oralia Morales was accused last week of writing hot checks as collateral to play at several illegal game rooms that were shut down in May, according to investigators.
Morales was arrested Oct. 13 and charged with theft between $1,500 and $20,000, a state jail felony, punishable by up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine. She was arraigned by Municipal Court Judge Ricky Soliz and released on an $8,000 personal recognizance bond.
Morales surrendered after the Texas Rangers issued a warrant for her arrest in connection to a theft investigation involving two local game room workers, who alleged she had written more than $2,000 in personal checks as collateral, some of which was never reimbursed, according to a criminal complaint.
A C & R game room employee told investigators he attempted to collect more than $1,700 Morales owed the business, located inside an old gas station at 900 E. Rice St., but she replied by saying, She did not have to reimburse the funds and there was nothing they could do about it, the complaint states.
