Texas asks Supreme Court to reinstate voter ID law

Following through on a promise made last month, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Friday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate a voter ID law that a lower court had found to be discriminatory.

The appeal, which could take months to resolve, will not affect rules adopted for the Nov. 8 general election that will allow registered voters to show a wider variety of identification at polling stations.

Paxton said the Texas law, enacted in 2011 with strong support from Republicans, was a common-sense response to fears of ballot fraud.

“Safeguarding the integrity of our elections is essential to preserving our democracy,” Paxton said. “Voter ID laws both prevent fraud and increase the public’s confidence in our elections.”
