Rick Perry encouraged Michael McCaul to take on Ted Cruz

In recent weeks, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul has said many people have encouraged him to challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2018 Republican primary.

It turns out one of those people may have been Rick Perry.

The former governor this summer encouraged McCaul, an Austin Republican, to run for the Senate seat, after Cruz famously declined to endorse Donald Trump in a primetime speech at the Republican National Convention, according to GOP sources who talked to the Texas Tribune.

Perry campaigned for Cruz during the presidential primaries after Perry ended his own White House run. He later endorsed Trump after Cruz dropped out.

1. McCaul is an asshole.

But he's not as big an asshole as Ted Cruz. I feel safe in saying that, because---with the exception of Donald Trump---nobody is a bigger asshole than Cruz.

None of them will ever get a vote from me, of course.
