Al Qaeda operatives may be planning attacks in three states, including Texas, in the run-up to Election Day, according to a CBS news report.
According to CBS, an unidentified source within the FBI said Texas, New York and Virginia were among possible targets.
U.S. authorities are taking the threat seriously, though the sources stress the intelligence is still being assessed and its credibility hasnt been confirmed. Counterterrorism officials were alerted to the threat out of abundance of caution, the report said.

FBI spokeswoman Michelle Lee said the bureau has been in close communication with Central Texas and Austin area law enforcement and government officials.

(45,806 posts)almost in the spotlight, but Texas & Virginia? Other than oil, there's not a heck of a lot in Tx. and certainly would command the world wide attention that a NY would, and Virginia is even more puzzling.
other than having three of the top ten largest cities, the technology center in Austin, the largest army training facility at Fort Hood, a major financial/insurance center in Dallas, a major port city in Houston, the second largest population in the country besides also being a leading agricultural producer there is absolutely nothing in Texas.

(45,806 posts)notoriety for the attackers. The centers you mentioned are crucial for the US, but don't give the attackers the kind of world wide attention they're looking for.
Whatever their reasons are, I HOPE our intelligence community prevents it!

(112,329 posts)I'm posting a story from a Texas newspaper in the Texas Group. There have been terrorist incidents in Texas (the police ambush in Dallas, the Muslim shooting in Garland, multiple attacks at Fort Hood) so terrorist incidents are on the minds of Texans as much as they are in NYC or anywhere else in the country. These incidents are enough to persuade at least one member of my family to be a Trump voter. There are millions of Democratic voters in this state and it is possible that news of this nature may be significant enough to frighten away some of those voters.
I wouldn't dare say that all New York has is NYC even though the metro area makes up nearly half of the population of the state so I along with many others get defensive when others think that the only things in the state are oil, boots, cowboy hats and cow chips. I've never worn cowboy boots in my life and although I've dodged some horse droppings while marching in the county parade, there are plenty of good things here beyond the stereotypes.
Besides what I mentioned, we also take offense as to Texas cities being destroyed in the movies (e.g., Dallas in Asteroids, Houston in Independence Day).

(783 posts)It's hard to imagine even Russia wanting to destabilize Texas elections -- after all, they're flying the same colors (red) -- but seriously, Texas is voting for Putin's man Trump, if I'm understanding correctly? So what would be the point? Or are you thinking this is real Al Qaeda and they're still after Papa Bush from the original Iraq war? Maybe if Jeb was the candidate. I'm just not seeing it. But admitted and agreed, Texas is big, a Texas WalMart is like a giant warehouse -- you want a hi-lo rather than a scooter if you need to ride up and down the aisles -- but why would Russia, Al Qaeda, or even the FBI want to disrupt the election there? It's downright puzzling, And you left out the NASA presence. "Houston, we have a problem."

(112,329 posts)However, I believe that the Rio Grande Valley has been more consistently Democratic than Austin even throughout the Reagan years. In terms of sheer number of voters, I suspect that Houston probably provides the largest voting block since there are around 4 million voters there compared to about 1 million in Austin.

No fear here.
Sad republicans have nothing but fear for voters.

Lots of things to do to.
I have a list of ten people so far.
Just have to time all the rides.
I have big old car.
I drive 3 or 4 people at a time.
