Hearne meeting ends abruptly as three council members walk out
HEARNE In an uncharacteristic streak of productivity, the Hearne City Council on Tuesday night was able to approve four of its first five agenda items. It wasnt until the council began discussing whether the mayor should be able to vote that the meeting went off the rails.
The conversation kicked off with Mayor Ruben Gomez telling Councilwoman Shirley Harris she was out of order for a comment she made about it not mattering who put the item on the agenda. Residents seated in the council chambers applauded when the mayor told her he would have a police officer escort her out if she made a second remark. The discussion snowballed from there, ending with Councilman Rodrick Jackson walking out of the meeting, with Harris and Councilwoman Martha Castilleja following close behind.
Mr. Mayor, if youre going to continue to do what is illegal I will not attend the meetings until you do what is right, Jackson said before standing up at the dais and gathering up his personal items.
Their exits left the six-member council without a quorum, ending the meeting.
