Texas woman sues Popeyes, claiming flesh-eating worms from meal bit back
A San Antonio woman is suing Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, claiming she became infected with flesh-eating New World screwworms after eating the restaurant's rice and beans.
As Courthouse News reported, the suit filed Tuesday by Karen Goode accuses the restaurant of knowingly selling her the tainted food, which resulted in her hospitalization as she was eaten alive "from the inside out" by maggots typically linked with livestock and other warm-blooded animals.
The complaint says that "the flesh eating screwworms entered Plaintiff's digestive track {sic}, laid eggs which embedded in the interior lining of Plaintiff's small intestine, and when hatched, infested Plaintiff's body and began to eat Plaintiff alive from the inside-out."
Screwworm infection can be deadly if left untreated, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
