Call center closing will eliminate more than 800 Waco-area jobs

The General Dynamics Information Technology call center in Lacy Lakeview, which assists those seeking health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act, will close on May 31, eliminating about 840 jobs, the company has confirmed.

As required by law, General Dynamics sent a warning notice to the Texas Workforce Commission, informing the agency of its plans to shutter operations that have been ongoing since 2013.

Meanwhile, the company Monday released a statement by email, saying, “As of May 31, we will cease contact center operations performed in support of our customer in Waco, Texas. We regret that the closure of this facility will impact employees, their families and the community at large.”

A separate release identified centers in Waco and in Coralville, Iowa, as those in the system that are “scaling down.” But the local facility will go beyond seasonal staffing adjustments, according to the statement, and will permanently close.
