Wichita County DA troubled attorneys making less than court reporters

Wichita County District Attorney Maureen Shelton told the commissioners court Monday that it was troubling that seasoned attorneys in her office make less than a court reporter with a year and a half experience.

At a preliminary budget discussion, Shelton requested raises for some attorney positions to at least an equal level as similar positions in the public defender’s office.

For emphasis, Shelton said she has assistant DA’s with seven years experience making just under $60,000 ($59,385.71), while a court reporter with minimal education or experience makes $70,980, according to the approved 2018 budget). Shelton provided a document to the commissioners that shows on top of their salary, many court reporters take on additional work, like transcribing, that can net them another $25,000 annually.

According to website Salary.com, the average salary for a court reporter in Texas is about $50,000 base pay, not counting benefits.
