Refugio without water or power since Friday

REFUGIO — The road into Refugio hinted at the fury of Hurricane Harvey — torn and ripped up rooftops, downed power lines, crushed silos, and trees and utility poles ripped out of the earth by winds that topped 130 mph as it roared in Texas.

Perhaps nowhere was the misery index higher, however, than for Lacy Garza, her longtime boyfriend Jeremy Lewis and her mom, Lydia Villarreal. Lewis lost the trailer he called home and Garza was forced to clear out her ruined apartment Sunday.

Most of the afternoon was spent sifting through the ruins in search of things close to heart, with Lewis, 30, of Refugio finding a Houston Texans cap, shoes and pictures of Garza’s kids.

“I tried to talk to him to prepare him for what he was going to see,” said Garza, who was 9 when she and Villarreal survived Hurricane Andrew. “I’ve been through this and knew what I was going to see. I was going to come home to nothing.”
