City of Amarillo: 215,000 gallons of wastewater dumps into playa after pump fails

Two spills from a wastewater collection facility within Amarillo have resulted in more than 200,000 gallons of waste water dumping into a playa lake at Lakeside Drive and Interstate 40.

The spill happened Tuesday between 4 and 5:45 p.m. and again between 10:45 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. A pump failure at City Lift Station No. 29 was blamed for the spill.

A manhole overflowed near 1805 Lakeside due to the pump station’s failure.

A city news release indicated crews are repairing the affected pumps.

The City of Amarillo estimated Wednesday afternoon that the volume of the spill is 215,000 gallons.
